Searching the Web

Search Engines

How-to:
Choose a search engine such as Alta Vista, Yahoo, Excite, Lycos.  Browsers usually include a search area from which to make this choice.  Enter a keyword or phrase and select "go" or "search".  Each search engine functions differently; e.g. a phrase may need quotes around it in order to search by the exact phrase.  Check the search engine's advanced options or help sections to know specifically how it functions.  Some search engines will automatically categorize:
Example: Humanities>Arts>Music>Children.

Kansas City Public Library
Very straightforward, easy to understand information on search engines.  A good place to start.

Internet Tutorial

Search Engine Watch
Written by a software developer, this is a more sophisticated and thorough site containing information for software developers, web publishers, or users.

Site Addresses

How-to:
In the toolbar at the top of the browser window is an open area for typing the address.  An address must be typed exactly so that the browser can find the location.  Each portion of the address goes to a certain location at that site.

Example: University of Colorado site and related pages
    Home page:  http://www.colorado.edu
    College of Music:   http://www.Colorado.EDU/music/
    Music Education:   http://www.Colorado.EDU/music/musiceducation/

(Notice "edu" and "EDU"--the server at this site will usually take either version, but not all servers will function similarly).
