1. Use color features in Musictime to highlight rhythm values or separate parts.
2. Have students create a rhythmic phrase using cuisenaire rods. Have them practice clapping the pattern. Show them how to record into a looping or sequencing program. Go to the Step Editor to look at the graphic representations. Compare to the cuisenaire patterns--do they look the same? Save As a Standard MIDI file. Open the Standard MIDI File in a notation program to see the rhythmic values now as notes. Does it play the same as in the sequencing program? Print out for students to keep. Use a prepared notation guide along with the lesson to help learn notation values.
3. Record pieces from class lessons into a notation program. Transpose for band students to practice on their band instruments.
4. Record melody and/or chord
patterns into Band In a Box (accompaniment software); slow the tempo down so students can practice
by playing along. They will be able to see the on-screen keyboard
playing the melody and chord patterns. Switch to the notation
feature to watch the notes as the song plays!
